NCERT's Controversial Updates in Class 7 & 8 Social Science Textbooks (April–July 2025)

In April 2025, NCERT released a revised Class 7 Social Science textbook that removed all references to the Mughal dynasty and the Delhi Sultanate—including dynasties like the Tughlaq, Khalji, Mamluk, and Lodi. In their place, new chapters were introduced focusing on ancient Indian rulers such as the Magadha, Maurya, Shunga, and Satavahanas, along with a new chapter titled "How the Land Becomes Sacred" covering sacred and pilgrimage sites in India .

Later, on July 16, 2025, NCERT released a revised Class 8 Social Science textbook that stirred significant controversy. It portrayed Babur as a “brutal and ruthless conqueror” who slaughtered entire city populations; described Akbar as a ruler marked by both brutality and tolerance—highlighting the massacre of roughly 30,000 people at Chittorgarh; and depicted Aurangzeb as a military ruler known for destroying temples and gurdwaras, reinstating jizya, and exhibiting religious intolerance. To mitigate these stark portrayals, a “Note on Some Darker Periods in History” was added, urging students to engage with history dispassionately and assuring them they bear no responsibility for past atrocities. However, academics and educators criticized these revisions, accusing them of promoting a communal and ideologically biased interpretation of medieval history .
