   Shiva is a Hindu deity. As one of the Trimurti in the Hindu pantheon among Brahma and Vishnu,there are a number of temples dedicated to his worship in India and abroad but here we will talk about only Shiva's famous temples.we will talk about twelve jyotirlingas. 

Jyotirlinga means ‘column or pillar of light’. The ‘stambh’ symbol represents that there is no beginning or end.


Somnath

  Somnath temple is one of the famous temples of Shiva and one of the temples of twelve jyotirlingas. 

    Somnath temple is located in prabhas patan,veraval in Gujarat India. It is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites, the Tirth Kshetra for the Hindus and is the first among the twelve jyotirlingas shrines of shiva. The temple lies at the meeting of Kapila , Hiran and Saraswati rivers and the waves of the Arabian sea. 

   The temple was reconstructed several times in the past after repeated destruction by multiple Muslim invaders and rules, notably starting with an attack by mahmud ghazni in January 1026.

Mallikarjuna

   Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple (IAST:Mallikārjuna) or Srisailam Temple is a Hindu temple. located at Srisailam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh 

    It is significant to the Hindu sects of both Shaivism and Shaktism as this temple is referred to as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and as one of the eighteen Shakti Pithas, centers of the Hindu Goddess. Shiva is worshiped as Mallikarjuna, and is represented by the lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Bhramaramba.

Mahakaleshwar


  Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Is located in the ancient city of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

  The temple is situated on the side of the holy river Shipra. The presiding deity, Shiva in the lingam form is believed to be Swayambhu, deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself as against the other images and lingams that are ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti.

Kedarnath

   One of the most revered temple destinations of India, Kedarnath town is nestled in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas.

   Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the ancient temple has exquisite architecture and is built of extremely large but evenly shaped gray stone slabs. A conical rock formation inside the temple is worshiped as Lord Shiva in his “Sadashiva” form. The Kedarnath temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a part of Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. Behind the Kedarnath temple, stand the Kedarnath peak, Kedar Dome and other Himalayan peaks.

 BEST TIME TO VISIT

From May to October is the best time to visit Kedarnath. During winter months, the town remains closed due to heavy snowfall. The temple has been shut for the winter of 2021-22.

Bhimashankar 

  Bhimashankar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva situated in its eponymous village, Bhimashankar, in Pune district of Maharashtra.

  The temple's Shiva lingam is one of the three Jyotirlingas of Maharashtra. The mandir is situated on a mountain, 110 kilometers away from Pune. The temple's vicinity has rare plant and animal species. The mandir is located in Khed taluka, in the Bhimashankar forest range.

Vishweshwar

 The Vishweshwar temple is located in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India, on the western bank of the Ganga River. Varanasi was formerly called Kashi, and so this temple is popularly known as Kashi Vishwanath temple.

 The earliest mention of this temple is in the Puranas.

  It has been demolished by Qutb-ud-din-Aibak in 1194 AD and then by other invaders over the centuries including Mughal emperor, Aurangazeb, in 1669, who built a mosque on its site.

   The current structure was built on an adjacent site by Maratha ruler, Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar, of Indore, in 1777.

Vaidyanath

  Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, also known as Baidyanath, Vaijnath and Baijnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the most sacred abodes of Shiva.

  Vaidyanath finds mention in many Hindu texts like Shivapurana, Matsyapurana, and Ramayana along with contemporary history books. Set in a spectacular location near the Mayurakshi River, the temple is cherished by religious travelers.

Millions of pilgrims flock to Vaidyanath for blessings in the auspicious month of Shravan.


Nageshwar  

   Nageshwar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva located in Dwarka, Gujarat, India. one of the legendary temples mentioned in the Shiva Purana and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Nageshvara jyotirlinga is situated in a forest called Darukavanam In Gujarat. 

  Legend goes that it was here that a demon called Daaruka imprisoned a Shiva devotee called Supriya. The chants of ‘Om Namah Shivay’ by Supriya invoked Lord Shiva who arrived here and vanquished the demon. A self-manifested Shivalinga appeared here and is prayed to this date.


Rameshwaram

 Ramanathaswamy temple is a popular place of worship and prominent tourist attraction in Rameshwaram. 

  Ramanathaswamy temple is known for its imposing structure, majestic towers, intricate sculptural works and corridors, making it an architectural marvel. The main deity worshiped in the temple is in the form of lingam. There is also an idol of Nandi, which is a massive statue, about 17.5 feet tall. Other deities worshiped here include Goddess Vishalakshi, Parvathavardhini, Lord Vinayaka and Lord Subrahmanya, Utsava idol, Sayanagriha and Perumal.


Omkareshwar

  Omkareshwar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located in Mandhata, nearby Khandwa city in Khandwa district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

  It is on an island called Mandhata, near Khandwa city in the Narmada River at Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh, India; the shape of the island is said to be like the Devanagari ॐ symbol.

Trimbakeshwar


  Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple (श्री त्र्यंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर) is an ancient Hindu temple in the town of Trimbak, in the Trimbakeshwar tehsil in the Nashik District of Maharashtra, India, 28 km from the city of Nashik and 40 km from Nashik road.

  Kushavarta kund (sacred pond) in the temple premises, built by Shrimant Sardar Raosaheb Parnerkar who was the Fadnavis of Indore State, is the source of the Godavari River, the second longest river in India. A bust of Sardar Fadnavis and his wife can be seen on the edge of the kunda. The current temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao after it was destroyed by Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.

Grishneshwar 

  Grishneshwar Temple is a Hindu temple of Shiva in Verul village of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district,Maharashtra, India. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga mandirs.The mandir is a national protected site, one and a half kilometers away from the Ellora Caves. 

  Grushneshwar is mentioned in Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.An outstanding example of medieval Indian temple design stands before visitors adorned with intricate carvings that form part of its extraordinary architecture. Legends claim that Ahilyabai Holkar, a powerful ruler from the Holkar dynasty, built this temple back in the 18th century.
